From autumn 2000 to May 2003, the small restaurant ISSAN was located on Unter den Linden, directly opposite the Hotel Adlon. Here, Thai cuisine and sushi found their place at the political and social heart of Berlin. Its sushi kitchen was so well regarded that the Japanese Embassy regularly sent official guests there. In 2001, the chefs of Maothai, together with the Hotel Adlon, catered the gala dinner for the first major ASEAN gathering in Berlin.
With this, Thai cuisine had found its rightful place — as the only Asian restaurant on Unter den Linden, at the square before the Brandenburg Gate, where otherwise only the great international cuisines of Europe were represented.
